Troy met his wife, Joann Westaby on a blind date, while she was attending nursing school in Southern Illinois. September 4th they would have celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary. He proposed three times before she finally said “Yes”. He always said he had to “find higher ground”. Together, they had six children.
After attending Carbondale VoTech, Troy worked as an auto mechanic and spent several years in the gas business in Elizabeth, Illinois. His love for motors extended to model airplanes and cars. Through the years, Troy and Joann saved many castaway cats and dogs. Wherever he went, you would find Troy sitting with a cat purring on his lap or a dog sitting at his feet. He and Joann were longtime members of the New Diggings Primitive Methodist Church.
