Sister Marjorie Buttner, OP, died Nov. 7, 2025, at St. Dominic Villa, Hazel Green, Wis. Her Remembering Service and Funeral Mass will take place at 11 a.m. Tues., Nov. 18 at St. Dominic Villa. Casey-McNett Funeral Home and Cremation Services is handling arrangements.
She was born Aug. 22, 1929, to Frederic and Anna (Parziale) Buttner in Boston, Mass. She professed vows with the Dominican Sisters of Sinsinawa in 1953 and received the religious name Sister Stella Maris. She earned her BA in French from Dunbarton College, Washington, D.C., and a master’s degree of education in guidance and counseling from Loyola University of Chicago, Ill.
Sister Marjorie's ministry was dedicated to teaching and archival work. She taught at Visitation High School, Chicago, and Newman High School, Wausau, Wis. She was a teacher and counselor at Anaconda Central High School, Anaconda, Mont., and Edgewood High School, Madison, Wis. She served as the congregation archivist at Sinsinawa Mound for nearly 20 years. She was a member of the Archivists for Congregations of Women Religious (ACWR) and served as vice president and president of the organization for several years. In 2017, Sister Marjorie was missioned to St. Dominic Villa. Her prayerful and loving spirit will be missed by all.
Sister Marjorie was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, F. Daniel Buttner. She is survived by her sister, Carole (Louis) Maloof; sister-in-law, Patricia Buttner; nieces; and her Dominican Sisters.
