Obituary

Sister Maggie Hopkins, OP, died Dec. 16, 2025, at her home in Madison, Wis. Her Memorial Service will take place 10:30 a.m. Fri., Jan. 23, 2026, at Holy Wisdom Monastery, Middleton, Wis. Friends may gather at 10 a.m., and refreshments will follow the service. For those planning to attend, please RSVP to mmurphy@sinsinawa.org. Casey-McNett Funeral Home and Cremation Services is handling arrangements.

She was born June 27, 1944, to John and Mary (McCormick) Hopkins in Milwaukee, Wis. She made profession as a Dominican Sister of Sinsinawa in 1966 and received the religious name of Sister Marie Josette. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Religious Studies from Mundelein College, Chicago, Ill., and a Master of Arts in Theology from Wartburg Theological Seminary, Dubuque, Ia.

Sister Maggie’s ministry was dedicated to teaching and higher education. She taught at Regina High School, Minneapolis, Minn.; Trinity High School, River Forest, Ill.; and Dominican High School, Whitefish Bay, Wis. She served the Sinsinawa Dominican Congregation as vocation director at Sinsinawa and served in youth ministry at Cardinal Stritch College, Milwaukee. For several years, she served on the Edgewood High School Board of Directors. Sr. Maggie served for more than 30 years at Edgewood University, Madison, as an educator and vice president of mission. She cherished her family, Dominican life, and her many relational communities. May Sister Maggie's spirit continue to bless us!

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Philip and Joseph; and sisters, Therese Hopkins, Sister Mary Hopkins, OP, and Susan Hopkins. She is survived by a brother, John (Mary Lou) Hopkins; a sister, Frances (Pat) Quinn; Frank Melzl (Susan's partner); nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews; and her Dominican Sisters.
