Joan M. Havertape, 79, of Dubuque, Iowa, formerly of Benton, Wisconsin, passed away Saturday, July 19, 2025. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, July 24, 2025 at St. Patrick’s Church in Benton, Wisconsin, with the Rev. David Flanagan officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4-7:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 23 at Casey-McNett Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Cuba City, Wisconsin, and from 10-10:45 a.m. Thursday at St. Patrick’s Church prior to the service.
Joan was born on September 24, 1945 in Dubuque, Iowa, the daughter of Percy and DeEtta Carter. She graduated from Benton High School in 1963 and earned her associate’s degree from Madison Area Technical College, Madison, Wisconsin. Joan was united in marriage to Robert “Bob” Havertape on July 9, 1966 at St. Patrick’s Church in Benton, Wisconsin.
Joan worked as a secretary at John Deere Tractor Works, University of Dubuque and Honkamp Krueger. She was a devoted mother to her two sons and loved her grandchildren dearly, spoiling them whenever possible. She and Bob loved to travel domestically as well as internationally. They enjoyed playing golf together until Joan tired of Bob’s golf instruction. Joan will be remembered as a loving and generous soul who also had a feisty attitude when necessary.
Joan is survived by her husband of 59 years, Bob Havertape, Dubuque, IA; two sons, Matt (Sue) Havertape, Dubuque, IA, and Brad (Claire) Havertape, Livingston, MT; three grandchildren, Ian Havertape, Clare Havertape and Lexi Clark; a twin sister, Jean Christensen, Dubuque, IA; a brother, Jimmy (Idaine) Carter, Blanchardville, WI; and a sister-in-law, Elaine Carter.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two siblings, John Carter and Karan (Ray) Piper; and a brother-in-law, Phil Christensen.
Memorials in Joan’s name will be given to St. Jude Children’s Hospital and may be sent to Casey-McNett Funeral Home at 123 N. Jackson St., Cuba City, WI 53807.
